The rumor mill is gearing up for the launch of Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone, and the latest rumor has an aroma of fermented hops and barley.
Many observers expect Apple to release a new model in late spring or early summer. CEO Steve Jobs said recently that an updated mobile OS would be ready this summer–a perfect opportunity to release new iPhone hardware. Fueling speculation that a June launch is imminent is a report from Boy Genius Report that it has “confirmed with multiple AT&T sources that the carrier has now put a block on employees taking vacations in June.”
Engadget is fanning the flames with photographs it says contain images of the forthcoming phone. Here’s Engadget’s explanation on how the images surfaced:
Apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don’t have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn’t booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It’s not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it’s certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.
Perhaps bolstering Engadget’s report is a Twitpic posted in February that bears a striking resemblance to Engadget’s images. However, other blogs reported that the images were actually of a Japanese iPhone counterfeit. As “proof” of the validity its report, Engadget reposted a grainy, heavily redacted photo it posted with a January iPad prototype story it now says shows the forthcoming iPhone sitting next to the then-yet-to-be released iPad.
Additionally, a MacRumors reader posted these images–purportedly from a Chinese Web site–that appear similar to those posted earlier by Engadget, although some readers suggest these are really images of the what was described as a Japanese counterfeit.
Of course, one has to wonder whether a company that guards the secrecy of its unreleased products as fiercely as Apple would actually allow an employee to take a prototype out to mingle with pretzels and spilled beer.

There is a broad range of applications for 3G, which makes investment in a licence attractive
Dubai: 3G is a synonym with the “third generation” of mobile telephony, officially named International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000).
It comprises a couple of standards for mobile tele-communications fulfilling specifications by the International Telecommunication Union, which includes UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well as other wireless standards such as DECT and WiFi.
Services include wide-area wireless voice tele-phone, video calls and wireless data, all in a mobile environment.
Compared to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher data rates (at least 200 kbit per second peak bit rate to fulfil IMT-2000 specification). Today’s 3G systems can offer practice of up to 14.0 Mbit per second on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit per second on the uplink.
There is a broad range of applications for 3G, which makes investment into a licence very attractive to telecom operators due to high yields on the service. Some of the applications are:
- Mobile TV: A TV channel can be watched on a 3G mobile phone or PDA (personal digital assitant)
- Video on demand: Movies are sent to the subscriber’s phone.
- Video conferencing: Subscribers can see as well as talk to each other.
- Tele-medicine: A medical provider monitors or provides advice to the potentially isolated subscriber.
- Location-based services: A provider sends localised weather or traffic conditions to the phone, or the phone allows the subscriber to find nearby businesses or friends.
Requirements
To use 3G services, a compatible device is necessary. A phone that has 3G functionality has nothing to do with the number of cameras or the memory it has. The device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card or its 3G data card, which are both generally provided by the telecom network operator. Through that, customers get connected to the internet whenever they are within a 3G network.
If they are not in one, the device switches automatically to 2G or 2.5G services without interruption, but with slower data services.
The service must be subscribed to, and many providers charge flat rates for mobile data usage. However, customers have to be careful when using 3G data abroad when they leave their home network, as costs for data transfer can dramatically rise.
Mobile infrastructure providers are currently working on a new technology called 4G or IMT Advanced. 4G refers to all IP packet switched networks, mobile ultra-broadband at gigabit speed access and multi-carrier transmission.
A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution.

Earlier today we posted an article looking at some of an analyst called Maynard J. Um’s CDMA iPhone and iPhone 4G predictions, I recently took a closer look at AppleInsider’s article, this revealed some more pretty substantial predictions regarding the rumored iPhone 4G.
Some of his predictions are more significant then others, the more obvious looking predictions state that he believes the iPhone 4G will feature 64GB of NAND flash storage, a 5 megapixel camera, an AMOLED screen and increased battery life, however the next prediction was something that I have not came across before.
Um believes that Apple’s next-generation iPhone may feature a rear touch panel, this will give the iPhone 4G touch capabilities on both sides, which could perhaps increase hand-held gaming functionality, application intuitiveness and much more.
Other predictions stated that the 4G will be capable of high definition video playback and high definition video capture, to do this the handset’s processing power will have to be superior to the 3GS’s.

Crank up the rumor machine, kiddos — it’s déjà vu all over again.
In case you haven’t heard, one of the tech world’s favorite on-again, off-again topics has been resurrected. Yep: It’s the seemingly immortal “iPhone on Verizon” buzz, back in the news yet again.
This time, a report in The Wall Street Journal is reigniting the Verizon-iPhone flame. The story, originally published on Monday, cites the always-popular “people briefed by the company” as saying Apple will produce a CDMA-ready version of its iPhone sometime this year. The new iPhone, the Journal suggests, will be aimed directly at Verizon.
Hang on, though: Before you roll out the nearest welcome mat, there are a few things you may want to consider.
iPhone on Verizon: A Skeptic’s Perspective
When a story quotes nameless people and provides no further evidence, it’s tough to evaluate the reliability of its information. Sure, it could be dead-on — but, as we’ve seen plenty of times in the past, it could also be complete hogwash.
Me, I like to treat these types of speculative stories with a healthy dose of skepticism. Until there’s any concrete reason to believe something, it’s ultimately all just hearsay.
In the case of the new Verizon-iPhone scuttlebutt, there are four ideas I’d raise for your critical contemplation. Any one of them could be right or wrong, but again, the point is that we really just don’t know.
- The Verizon-iPhone History
The simple reality is that we’ve heard the Verizon-iPhone rumor many times before. The talk swept through the blogosphere again and again in 2009 — in fact, we saw it surface as far back as 2008. That alone is a powerful reason to remain cautiously skeptical about any new “definitely true” gospel.
- The Verizon-iPhone Technology
Following an earlier set of Verizon-iPhone rumors last spring, the carrier’s CEO told reporters Apple wouldn’t likely want to bring the iPhone to the company until its 4G network was in place; the CDMA technology Verizon currently uses, he stated, was too dated and limited in scope for Apple’s interests.
Verizon is still relatively early in the development of its 4G network. The carrier has said it doesn’t expect to reach even a 66-percent coverage level in America until sometime in 2012.
Could Apple have altered its position on the Verizon CDMA issue? Sure; in fact, an updated version of the WSJ’s story suggests the company “changed its mind as it realized Verizon’s upgrade would take longer than expected.”
Believe whichever side you will, but it’s one more potential obstacle to bear in mind when evaluating the latest Verizon-iPhone rumor.
- Verizon-iPhone and the Exclusivity Issue
Apple’s exclusivity contract with AT&T has long been shrouded in mystery. Recent reports have guessed that the deal expires sometime in 2010, but there’s never been any official confirmation.
Assuming the deal is set to expire this year, though — a move that could clear the way for a happy Verizon-iPhone union — some believe the odds of it actually ending are still rather low. Just last month, multiple analysts suggested the launch of the iPad likely included an extension to Apple’s exclusivity arrangement with AT&T (or, as the satirical paparazzi put it, “Celebrity power-couple Apple and AT&T is anything but over”).
- The Benefits of a Verizon-iPhone Rumor
This last one may sound a bit on the paranoid side, but the truth with any “leaked info” is that there’s always someone who stands to benefit from the buzz. Consider the fact that since this latest Verizon-iPhone story broke, the stocks of both Verizon and Apple have shot upward, while the finances of Research in Motion, Palm, and AT&T have all taken a hit.
Then there’s the competition side of the equation: Android-based phones are simply exploding right now, and the slew of newly released options is increasingly eating away at Apple’s mobile market share. A report released just this week finds Android creeping dangerously close to the iPhone’s American stronghold — and with slick new handsets like the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Galaxy S on the way, sales of Android phones are only going to climb higher in the months to come.
With the possibility of a shiny new iPhone on a slightly less evil-seeming carrier, consumers considering an Android phone might instead wait it out — meaning competitors’ sales would suffer at least through the start of summer.
I’m not suggesting some kind of massive conspiracy theory here. All I’m saying is that one way or another, there are ample ways investors can benefit from a well-placed “leak.” As a cautious news consumer, this is crucial information to keep in mind.
Remember: Apple-oriented rumors are a dime a dozen. Only time will tell whether this one proves to be true, but in the meantime, treat the talk for what it is. Until some convincing facts are tossed our way, it all amounts to little more than high-profile speculation.
